Major European Digital Infrastructures for HPC and AI: Similarities, Differences, and Convergences Among These Infrastructures in the Context of Increasing Hybridization of HPC and AI Use Cases

Europe is simultaneously deploying two families of major digital infrastructures. On the one hand, EuroHPC supercomputers—such as JUPITER or Alice Recoque, to name just a few of the exascale systems—are primarily designed for scientific and industrial computing. On the other hand, AI Factories/Gigafactories are scaled for the training and inference of large-scale AI models.
Bull is a major player in the provision of HPC and AI systems, which are among its four key areas of technological development.
As such, we will share an overview of the similarities and differences between HPC and AI infrastructures, as well as the developments we believe are essential in the race for performance. We will then explore the convergence of HPC and AI applications in the context of scientific and industrial computing (in the broadest sense), and what this implies for HPC infrastructures. Finally, we will address the current challenges of standardizing HPC and AI infrastructures.

Biography: With 30 years of experience in software engineering, telecommunications, embedded systems and large-scale digital platforms, Olivier Philippe has built a strong track record in leading complex technology organisations and delivering innovation at scale. As head of Research & Development at Bull, he leads the company’s R&D organisation, driving the development of computing, networking and AI innovations in support of European technological sovereignty. Prior to joining Bull, he served as Vice President of Devices Engineering at Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu, where he helped scale a leading open-source engineering organisation. Before that, he spent ten years within a major telecommunications group, leading the transformation of TV and streaming services across 12 European countries and reaching nearly 18 million devices through frequent agile releases. Earlier in his career, he held an engineering management position at Texas Instruments, delivering embedded processor solutions, and worked as a systems integrator and software engineer on large-scale IT infrastructure projects. Olivier holds a national telecommunications engineering diploma from France.
