Engineering Simulation Problem Statement:
The parallel efficiency and simulation turn-around times of CAE software continues to be an important factor behind engineering and scientific decisions to develop models at higher fidelity. Most parallel simulations use scalable Linux clusters for their demanding HPC requirements, but for certain classes of FEA models, data I/O can severely degrade overall scalability and limit CAE effectiveness. As model sizes grow and the number of processing cores is increased for a single simulation, it becomes critical for each thread on each core to perform I/O operations in parallel, rather than rely on the master compute thread to collect each I/O process in serial.
The combination of scalable (CAE) application software, industry-standard compute clusters, and Panasas High-Performance Storage, provides engineers with new and significant performance advantages in running advanced simulations. The advantages for users of CAE software include efficient parallel scalability, dramatic cost-performance improvements and the capability to routinely obtain high-fidelity results from simulations, such as LES, that were previously impractical to run.
Panasas Solution Alliances:
Today’s advanced CAE simulations require an efficient parallel computing solution tightly integrated with a high-performance storage solution, allowing the application to execute massively parallel compute and I/O-intensive jobs without experiencing workload bottlenecks. Panasas has combined with major software vendors such as ANSYS®, CD-adapco, Dassault Systemes and LSTC to maximise the way their applications handle the input/output of data. Furthermore, Panasas has combined with leading cluster providers such as Bull, SGI® and Dell™ to supply approved parallel compute and storage appliances that are fully supported by these global vendors.

Panasas was founded in 1999, following research by Carnegie Melon University into the future file-system requirements of four flagship US Government research facilities.
Since then, Panasas has worked with many academic and government organizations, software vendors and commercial companies, to help them understand how to maximize their applications in order to take advantage of our high-performance storage file-system.
Panasas is also working with Teratec to provide engineering knowledge to its members - with the goal of helping them to maximize their in-house, or commercial, applications.
Panasas also provides systems for development/testing and ultimately contributes to the Teratec members’ environments so that they can execute the most-demanding applications, and provide better simulations results, faster than ever before. |
