Satellite data dedicated to environment and climate: Digital twins ahead

Blind men, pink elephants and digital twins of the ocean
By Ronan Fablet, IMT Atlantique and Julien Le Sommer, IGE

We will discuss how machine learning and new digital technologies are affecting the field of ocean sciences and observations. We will illustrate how this new context changes the capacity of these scientific communities to reach their objectives and opens new perspectives in terms of synergies between numerical approaches, observations and theories. We will also discuss the conditions for the realization of this transition.

Biography: Ronan Fablet is a Professor at IMT Atlantique and a senior scientist at Lab-STICC (France) in the field of data science and ocean science. He currently holds a research chair on physics-informed AI for ocean monitoring and surveillance.

Biography: Julien Le Sommer co-leads the computational oceanography research group at Institut des Géosciences de l’Environnement à Grenoble. He is interested in the observation, the modelling and the prediction of ocean circulation. He is contributing to the development of the NEMO european ocean modelling framework.
