Europe is on its way towards "Hybrid Qomputing"

Organised and moderated by Kristel Michielsen, Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Guillaume Colin de Verdière, International Expert in HPC, CEA, and Jean-Philippe Nominé, HPC Strategic Collaborations Manager, CEA

Use-cases to demonstrate the added value of Hybrid Qomputing: the HPCQS portfolio
By Venkatesh Kannan , Technical Manager, ICHEC

In quantum computing, many algorithms and their application to practical use-cases have the potential to benefit from exploiting hybrid HPC-QC/QS platforms and workflows. In such hybrid computations, classical algorithmic components are combined with quantum algorithms. To achieve this, it will be necessary to decompose the original larger problem into subproblems that can be mapped on to suitable classical and quantum computing resources taking into account the current limitations of size, connectivity and quality of the NISQ devices.

This talk will present an overview of a number of scientific and industry-relevant use-cases that serve the co-design approach for HPCQS platforms, their evaluation and demonstration. The use-cases span study of physics and chemistry systems, optimisation problems and quantum machine learning.

Biography: Venkatesh Kannan works as Technical Manager at the Irish Centre of High-End Computing (ICHEC), the national centre for HPC in Ireland, whose core mission is to deliver HPC-related capabilities and expertise to higher education institutions, enterprises and public sector organisations on behalf of the Irish State. He is responsible for defining and implementing the vision, strategy and roadmap of the Centre’s technical activities. Venkatesh also represents ICHEC in a number of Irish and European activities, and coordinates the Centre’s technical activities across offices in Dublin and Galway.

ICHEC focuses on HPC and its applications to a wide range of areas, including high-performance data analytics (HPDA), big data management, artificial intelligence, optimisation of computational workflows and applications on a variety of compute platforms including extreme-scale HPC clusters, edge computing devices and quantum computing platforms. These are applied to a wide range of application domains such as environmental sciences, remote sensing, digital healthcare and digital twins.
