Environment, natural resources and climate change
Chaired by François ROBIDA, Head of Data, digital infrastructures and services Programme, BRGM

The new challenges of big data to understand the Earth: from the EPOS research infrastructure to HPC calculations for a better control of terrestrial risks and natural resources

By Florent BRENGUIER, Seismologist and Founder of the startup Sisprobe Université Grenoble Alpes

EPOS, a European infrastructure of 13 countries, aims to develop innovative multidisciplinary research for a better understanding of the physical and chemical processes of the Earth. Understanding how the Earth works as a system is of critical importance to modern society. Natural phenomena and hazards such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, landslides, tsunamis, weather conditions or global climate change, are manifestations of the dynamics of our planet with strong societal impacts. Similarly, human activity (exploitation of natural resources, management of industrial sites, landfilling, etc.) can have major consequences on our economy, our security and the environment.

This workshop will present the state of the art of EPOS on the one hand and show how the exponential increase in computing power and the management of large amounts of data has revolutionised our understanding of the subsoil. We will take examples from large-scale solid earth imaging projects highlighting how new datamining techniques applied to seismology can answer strategic questions about water resources, geothermal or even better understand the dynamics of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Biography : Florent Brenguier conducts research in the fields of underground auscultation at the University of Grenoble Alpes. His areas of interest concern the prediction of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. He is the founder of the Sisprobe startup, which promotes an innovative subsurface ultrasound technique that has various applications, particularly in the field of green energy such as geothermal energy. He is also Scientific Director for French Mobile Seismological Equipment at EPOS-RESIF.
