Decision support tool for the energy transition: Numerical simulation for the planning of heat and cold networks

By Frédéric DERKX, Chief Modelling Officer, ForCity

Numerical simulation tools have been present in the industrial world for many years, covering a wide range of applications, including issues related to the use of natural resources. Their use, however, generally remains within the prerogatives of business experts. ForCity aims to bring its tools into the hands of non-expert decision makers. The For District Heating solution is part of this process by allowing players in the heat and cold distribution sector to use, via a decision-making tool, complex algorithms to meet their operational needs.

This workshop will present:

  • One of the main problems of the operators of heat and cold networks, which is linked to the constrained optimisation of the extension of existing networks.

  • The resolution of this problem can be approached via mathematical modeling responding to a problem known as Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree (PCST).

  • The algorithm based on graph theory and linear optimization, solving this problem and adapted to the specific needs of the business, which was developed and interfaced in a solution accessible to non-experts.
