TERATEC 2017 Forum
Workshop 7 - Wednesday, June 28 from 14:00 to 17:30
Interconnect

OpenCAPI
Steve FIELDS, IBM Fellow, Chief Engineer of Power Systems, IBM SYSTEMS & TECHNOLOGY Group

Abstract : As the challenges of silicon manufacturing continue to grow, the industry has been faced with a reduction in price/performance improvement attributable to microprocessor architecture, design and technology. This has created a strong need for hardware accelerators to provide new sources of performance for server applications. At the same time, the needs of HPC and Hyperscale Datacenters are driving much higher performance requirements for networking and storage. In addition, new memory technologies are emerging which will have a tremendous effect on system architecture and the economics of datacenters. This talk will describe how OpenCAPI provides the speed and efficiency required to integrate these new technologies into servers, and how the open nature of the OpenCAPI ecosystem is increasing the pace of innovation in the industry.

Bio : Steve Fields is an IBM Fellow and is the Chief Engineer of Power Systems at IBM, leading the team responsible for Architecture and Design of IBM’s Power Systems servers. He has extensive experience in POWER microprocessor design focused on I/O, memory, caches and SMP interconnect, and has led system design since 2008 in both technical and executive management roles. In addition to delivering the IBM Power Systems roadmap, he is very active with OpenPOWER Foundation partners on technology and deployment collaborations, driving to increase the reach of the POWER architecture as well as to identify and develop new innovative technologies that can be integrated into Power Systems solutions.
