Intelligent diabetic socks for foot ulcer prevention using model reduction
Vincent LUBOZ, research Engineer, TEXISENSE

Abstract :  Foot pressure ulcers are a common complication of diabetes because of patient’s lack of sensitivity due to neuropathy. Deep ulcers appear internally when pressures applied on the foot create high internal strains nearby bony structures. Monitoring tissue strains is therefore needed for an efficient prevention. Biomechanical foot models can be used to assess strains within the foot and to determine the risk of ulcer formation from monitored pressures at the foot surface. These pressures are measured using a sock equipped with textile sensors. The sock is coupled with a biomechanical model, composed of a Finite Element mesh representing the soft tissues and rigid bodies for the bones. Because simulations last hours with this model, model reduction techniques, based on principal component analysis of the deformations of precomputed simulations, help decrease the computation time to reach real time interaction between our sock and our model and for an efficient daily pressure ulcer prevention.

Bio : Vincent Luboz is a research Engineer at Texisense since 2014 (http://www.texisense.com/) where he develops biomechanical models for the foot, knee and hip to prevent pressure ucler. He worked previously as research engineer in the TIMC-IMAG laboratory of the Grenoble Joseph Fourier University, in the Biosurgery and Surgical Technology Group in Imperial College London and in the Simp Group of the CIMIT laboratory in Boston, MA. He has a major interest in biomechanical modelling, medical simulation and medical imaging. His current work is devoted to the use of biomechanical simulation in medical and surgical applications. He received a PhD in Computer Sciences from the Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble, France, in 2003
