Workshop 6 - Wednesday, June 29 from 14:00 to 17:30
High Performance Integrated Computational Materials Engineering

Improve Understanding of Material Science using High Performance Computing
Elisabeth MASSONNI, director of the Center for Material Forming (CEMEF), research center of MINES PARISTECH

Abstract : Computational materials scientists have been among the first users of high performance computing. The numerical methods as well as the algorithms which have been developed span a wide range of mechanical problems, physical scales, and treated materials. Indeed, this collaboration between computer scientists and computational materials scientists is crucial not only for gaining scientific insight, but also for exploring new materials performances and optimizing complex industrial processes.

We present several numerical methods, including 3D parallel mesh adaptation, for modeling materials subjected to extreme mechanical environments such as: heat treatment of metallic-alloys inside 3D industrial furnaces, evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties under deformation, generation of virtual microstructures in a finite element context, as well as 3D mold flow and solidification modeling. The advantages, the numerical performances (up to 8000 cores), the encountered numerical issues as well as the ongoing investigations will be discussed.

Bio : Elisabeth MASSONI is the director of the Center for Material Forming (CEMEF), research center of Mines ParisTech, based in Sophia Antipolis. She graduated from Paris VI University (UPMC) in Computational Mechanics (DEA-MSc in 1982). She obtained a PhD in Material Sciences of Mines ParisTech in 1987.
Her research activities deal with the numerical simulation of material forming processes (thin sheet metal forming, incremental forming, plastic anisotropy,…) and heat treatment.  She co-authored more than 50 publications, and co-advised around 30 PhD thesis with tight collaboration with the industry (aeronautic, automotive manufacturer,..).

Elisabeth MASSONI was in charge of the Materials and Processes call at ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche) French National Research Agency, between 2005 and 2008 and the Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies call between 2006 and 2007.

Today, she serves as a member of the advisory board of CSMA (Computational Structural Mechanics Association), ESAFORM (European Scientific Association for Material Forming) and the competitiveness cluster “SAFE Cluster”. She is also the president of the Material Forming of Thin Product and SuperPlasticity Commision at SF2M (French Society in Metallurgy and Materials
