Simplified stress analysis of bonded joints using the macro-element technique

The objective of this presentation is to show the developments performed since 2004 on the simplified stress analysis of bonded joints or bolted/bonded joints, using the macro-element technique.

A significant reduction in computational time is obtained while ensuring an accurate prediction of the mechanical behavior with regards to the classical FE analyses. Some comparisons with experimental test results will be provided. The codes were developed on SCILAB then using C, to be interfaced in the cross-platform approach. An example of an implementation in the optimization platform will show the interest of the improvement of simulation technique in parallel of the HPC.

The minimization of the potential energy of the joint allows for the resolution of the system of differential equations, which comes from the constitutive equations and from the local equilibrium equations, deduced from the simplifying hypotheses on the kinematics and the adhesive stress tensor. The displacement fields are not assumed a priori: they are those which solve the system of differential equations. As result, only one macro-element is needed for the simulation of an entire bonded lap.

Dr Eric Paroissien studied Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the French engineering school ENSICA in Toulouse (FR) between 2000 and 2003. Since 2004, he works on the joining technologies in the frame of applied research. In 2006, he got the degree of PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University Toulouse III. Since 2007, he works as research engineer in SOGETI HIGH TECH. Since 2008, he particularly leads a research project on joining technologies. Since 2014, he is Associate Professor to the French engineering school ENSEIRB-MATMECA in Bordeaux.
