Defense and AI, the challenges of cybersecurity Artificial Intelligence is identified as a key technology for future defense systems. Collaborative air combat concepts involve heterogeneous systems of manned aircraft and unmanned vehicles. The latter must be remotely operated by humans and must be equipped with supervised autonomy capabilities to meet the requirements and constraints of collaborative air combat. AI technologies are necessary not only to automate the behavior of aircraft but also to assist humans. This is to address the needs related to the increasing complexity of future collaborative air combat systems and to enable humans to exercise their decision-making and mission-conduct responsibilities. Indeed, the application of AI for military operational purposes is in strict compliance with the French doctrine of employment, command chains, and the requirements of trustworthy AI. AI-based functions and systems, like others, must be protected from malicious attacks: cybersecurity is a challenge for defense AI, but AI can provide solutions for analyzing and mitigating risks. AI is also a scientific discipline. The triad of industry, research, and authorities such as AMIAD must work closely together for systems integrating automatisms and programs guaranteed to be compliant with a domain of operation, functionally framed by their specifications and operationally by human command. Applied research programs such as Confiance.AI or AIDGE develop methods and tools to ensure the good properties of AI-based functions, especially embedded AI. Europe and France have a certain advantage in this field of embedded AI, which should be applied in future sovereign defense systems. French actors in the information technology industry are also assets for this, both in terms of cybersecurity solutions and in terms of the provision of high-performance data spaces.
