Boosting European Innovation through leadership in High Performance Computing

Alessandro Profumo, Chief Executive Officer, Leonardo

We live in an increasingly digital world and it is true to say that data will be for the 21st Century what oil was for the 20th Century. Therefore, we must act now to guarantee the digital sovereignty of single EU Member States as well as at a pan-European level. Today, HPC is mainly used in large research centres and major corporations. To achieve its true potential, this technology needs to become commonplace across the entire economy, including small and medium-sized enterprises. Europe faces a challenge to make this leap. The answer is collaboration. Bringing together – at a European level – the main industrial players to work in partnership. There is already a concrete example in the form of the European Cloud project – also known as Gaia-X. EU Members are working on a shared approach – a direction that we can follow also for HPC. Leonardo’s vision, which is based on the full exploitation of digital technologies’ potential, for security and sustainable growth, is wholly aligned with the European strategy. At the core of this approach lies Leonardo’s supercomputer davinci-1, with its computing and storage capabilities that are exploited by HPC and Cloud solutions, through the expertise of high skilled professionals. As Leonardo seeks to become ever more a driver of innovation, HPC is a key element in this ambition. Therefore, to speed up digital progress we must be united, involving the entire ecosystem of open innovation. It is up to all of us to shape Europe’s digital future.
