Digital simulation technologies and applications in the healthcare sector

Towards Digital Medicine in France
Francois SIGAUX MD, Executive Scientific Director at the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux énergies alternative

Abstract:  One of the most important progress in Medicine comes from the recent irruption of the digital world in patient diagnosis, therapy and follow-up. This revolution comes from three breakthroughs:   first, extension of the Web of data to the semantic Web and the Web of things, second development of very efficient “life to digital” converters with extraordinary successes (e.g. genomics and imaging), and third development of algorithms allowing medical doctors to interpret the digital avatar of a given patient (digital patient) and search for “electronic twins”   in databases containing extensive and comprehensive patient data. Evidence in medicine thus is not only based on clinical trials, meta-analyses or consensus but also on real life data (“Data of all for treatment of each”). Although conceptually simple, this new paradigm faces several hard to broke down barriers including technical, economical and last but not least, ethical and regulatory ones.

Moreover, introducing these concepts is totally new for patients and practitioners, justifying to introduce new ideas in general education and in communication and to organize new educational courses for medical doctors and more generally to caregivers. Strong skills are needed not only in statistics, simulation and artificial intelligence but also in psychological science and ethics, since this new medicine considerably modifies patient/doctor interaction.

Starting by genomics, France has decided to place the first stone of Digital Medicine. The most important pieces of this strategic action will be discussed..

Bio : François Sigaux MD, Executive Scientific Director at the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux énergies alternatives, is also Professor of Medicine at the Paris Diderot University and Chairman of the Saint-Louis and Lariboisiere Hematological laboratories. His research is focused on genomics and bioinformatics as tools to understand cancer biology (more than 11K citations). In the past, it was appointed as research unit Director at Inserm and University and elected as Director of the Paris Institute of Hematology. Past President of the French Society of Hematology, it was president or member of several scientific committees and recently elected President of the “Canceropole Ile de France” and Vice President of the Curie Institute. During the two past years, as Director of the Research Department of the French National Cancer Institute, It was in charge to develop the digital medicine for cancer patients.
