Workshop 3 - Wednesday, June 29 from 9:00 to 12:30
Tools and algorithms for Big Data applications

Applied Convergence of Supercomputing and Analytics
Vincent PEL and Rob VESSE, CRAY COMPUTER

Abstract: The Urika-GX system leverages Cray’s hardware and software expertise to provide a unified analytics platform.  The goal is to offer flexibility to build hybrid workflows that combine big data and HPC applications on a single platform where previously multiple systems were needed. The pre-installed Hortonworks Data Platform provides a wide range of popular open source big data analytics tools including Apache Spark, Apache Hadoop, Apache Kafka and many others, integrated on a single platform. Apache Mesos provides a single resource manager for the entire system enabling all applications to share the available compute resources while allowing their preferred schedulers to be used.

The Cray GreenBlade™ blades loaded with Intel Broadwell processors, high memory densities with both PCIe SSDs and SATA HDDs provide both dense computing power and storage.  The Cray Aries ™ interconnect from our XC line gives us a high-speed application network in addition to a standard Ethernet network with 10 GigE links to the external network as well as a separate Ethernet based internal management network. The Aries interconnect enables traditional HPC applications such as MPI based codes and the Cray Graph Engine, our massively powerful PGAS based graph analytics engine, to co-exist with these big data applications on the same hardware.
