Virtualization

Using virtualisation for tailor-made HPC solutions
Dr. Ferdinand JAMITZKY, Application Group Deputy Leader at LEIBNIZ SUPERCOMPUTING CENTRE, Garching

Abstract : Future supercomputers will have to provide means that enable users to exploit their computing power in an easy-to-use way.

However, the connection between user interfaces like web-browsers on one hand and high performance systems on the other is non-trivial and often requires a lot of interfacing code to be written. For users it is therefore rather complicated to program their own applications and they very often rely on existing software solutions.

In this talk typical showcases are shown to demonstrate how virtualisation is used at LRZ to provide a seamless and easy to use HPC user experience which connects the Petascale HPC system SuperMUC at LRZ with Web-Services and interactive user interfaces running on the LRZ Cloud and LRZ’s vmware cluster. A key ingredient for this is the use of the programming language R which is used as a universal gluing language for HPC.

Biography: Dr. Ferdinand JAMITZKY is the deputy leader of the Application Support Team for SuperMUC at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Garching. He studied physics at the TU München and obtained his PhD at the Ludwigs-Maximilians-University Munich in the field of plasma physics. Before working at LRZ he was working for 20 years at the Max-Planck-Institute for extraterrestrial physics in Garching. He is author and co-author of numerous papers in the field of astro and plasma physics, nano and life science, theory of dynamical systems, image processing and high performance computing. He is responsible for analyzing, developing and porting applications to the High Performance, Big Data and Cloud Systems at LRZ, including the Petaflops System SuperMUC.
