Our industry is at an inflexion point where we are forced to radically transform our ecosystem to respond to the challenges of the extreme data, mobility, cloud and security.

HP is engaged in a program called ‘The Machine’ to rethink holistically our infrastructures, from the Datacenter to the edges devices. This is now viable vision due to innovation done on 3 core technologies : the SOCs “System On Chip”, the Non Volatile Memories and the photonic. Naturally this redesign covers the full stack of components that form our ecosystem, up to new tools to give sense to these data.

The HPC world will also see this profound transformation. 2 challenges are on our radar, capability systems to solve the Grand Challenges problems of Extreme Data at scale of Exaflops and beyond, and the HTC (“High Throughput Computing”) systems that will need to change by orders of magnitude the cost and energy required to solve the tsunami of data of the IoT (“Internet of Things”).

Patrick Demichel is Distinguished Technologist at Hewlett Packard, and Senior Architect in the Hyperscale Division Group. He graduated in computer technologies in 1980 at Control Data Corporation Paris. He has been working in HPC for HP since 1980.
