Numerical histopathology and artificial intelligence
By Xavier Descombes, Director of Research, Inria

Histopathology consists in examining microscopy images to make a diagnosis, a prognosis. Furthermore, the analysis of these images makes it possible to detect biological markers of a given pathology. The number of cases to be studied as well as the size of the images make this process tedious and comes up against a limited number of specialists. Digital tools are therefore now essential in this process.

We will discuss in this presentation the contributions of artificial intelligence in this area and the underlying issues, particularly due to the volume of data.

Biography: Xavier Descombes graduated from Telecom Paris in 1989. He obtained a DEA in mathematics from Paris VI in 1990 and a doctorate from Telecom Paris in 1993. After two post-doctoral years at KUL (Leuven) and Max Planck Institute (Leipzig), he joined INRIA in 1997. He is currently heading the EPC Morpheme (INRIA/CNRS/UCA) devoted to imaging for biology. He obtained "Le Prix de la Recherche", in the Health category, in 2008.
